Maritime Big investment
Wilhelmsen-foundation and Terravera are collalborating on sustainable shipping.
The Tom Wilhelmsen Foundation aims to support scientific, social, humanitarian, and cultural initiatives, as well as studies and research. “We have been awarded one million kroner in project funding,” says Terravera CEO Elisabet Kjerstad Bøe.
“This enables us to delve deeper into key sustainability challenges within the maritime industries and collaborate with industry players and our research partners to solve them,” she adds.
In Search of Sustainability Data
The project’s goal is to identify areas where recent research and/or data is lacking and to generate new insights into the effects of specific sustainability measures within maritime industries.
“We have already developed several digital models that can calculate and simulate the impact of sustainability measures within shipping, together with partners such as DOF and Jotun,” says Bøe. “This includes accurate calculations of emission reductions related to everything from fuel types and operational planning to maintenance strategies and anti-fouling products.”
Ripple Effects in the Industry
The advantage of working with digital models is that they can be expanded, adapted to different contexts, updated with new data, and shared. This facilitates value chain collaboration within the industry to address shared sustainability challenges. “We see that our partners in the maritime sector face many of the same challenges regarding access to reliable sustainability data, such as information on local environmental impacts from their operations,” Bøe continues.
“The project funding from the Wilhelmsen Foundation allows us to make a joint effort to produce new sustainability data and insights that can be shared across the value chain. We also hope that the project will generate ripple effects by identifying new solutions that can strengthen the green competitiveness of the Norwegian maritime industry,” Bøe concludes.
The project will run for one year and conclude in December.
