Zaptec and Terravera Foundation Partner to Lead the Way in Sustainable EV Charging Solutions

In an ambitious step toward a more sustainable future, Zaptec, a leading manufacturer of electric vehicle (EV) chargers, has entered a strategic collaboration with the Terravera Foundation. This partnership is designed to rigorously assess and reduce the environmental impact of Zaptec’s Pro chargers. The collaboration brings together Zaptec’s expertise in EV charging and Terravera’s cutting-edge sustainability modelling, creating a powerful synergy aimed at transparency and impactful climate action.

Addressing the Carbon Footprint of EV Chargers

The primary objective of the collaboration is to develop a thorough understanding of the carbon footprint associated with the installation and operation of Zaptec’s EV chargers. Paul Pschierer-Barnfather, an EV Charging Solutions Expert at Zaptec, highlights the significance of this undertaking: “With growing political pressure, climate challenges, and rising demand for sustainable products, there is enormous market potential for companies that take early action and lead the way toward a circular value chain.”

As the number of electric vehicles in Norway approaches nearly 760,000, the demand for efficient and eco-friendly charging solutions is crucial. Zaptec and Terravera’s partnership is set to deliver critical insights, including the carbon emissions from materials, power supply, and transport involved in installing and operating the Zaptec Pro chargers.

Overcoming Data and Modeling Challenges

One of the main challenges Zaptec faced was a lack of comprehensive data and specialized modelling capabilities to quantify the carbon footprint of their EV chargers. Terravera’s expertise fills this gap, offering Zaptec access to a sophisticated digital platform that facilitates collaboration with researchers, experts, and partners to accurately define and measure sustainability metrics.

Zaptec’s initial findings, developed through this partnership, provide quantifiable data on the carbon footprint of their EV chargers. This includes a comparison model that allows Zaptec to continuously refine and improve the environmental impact of their products. “Zaptec now has a robust model that enables us to track our progress and explore alternative solutions for a lower carbon footprint,” added Pschierer-Barnfather.

Rapid, Reliable Modeling and Data Access

Mohammed Barry, our Sustainability Modeler on the project says, “Zaptec’s collaboration with Terravera has been incredibly valuable. Through Terravera’s digital platform, we can quantify and understand the environmental impact associated with charging installations, offering Zaptec valuable transparency on emissions.” Barry emphasizes that this data-driven approach has fostered a rewarding and insightful collaboration

Terravera’s digital platform has expedited the process significantly, allowing Zaptec to swiftly build a bespoke carbon footprint model and integrate accurate reference data. This level of precision assures Zaptec’s commitment to actionable and reliable sustainability results.

A Vision for the Future of Sustainable Charging

The partnership also paves the way for ongoing sustainability improvements in EV charging. “In the immediate term, we can use Terravera’s model to enhance our product offerings,” notes Pschierer-Barnfather. “Working with experts to develop these models has shown us how impactful data-driven sustainability initiatives can be. We now see an opportunity to apply this methodology to other facets of our product line.”

Zaptec’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond product development; the company envisions a future where electric mobility and environmental consciousness coexist seamlessly. “Zaptec’s goal is to make EV charging more accessible and sustainable, inspiring a new generation to explore without compromising the planet,” he affirms.
