Mapping Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future with Vestland Fylkeskommune

How can Vestland Fylkeskommune determine the most sustainable energy mix by comparing renewable energy sources based on lifecycle emissions, land use, and energy output?

Challenge

Vestland Fylkeskommune faced an urgent need for detailed insights into renewable energy sources to address the region's strained energy situation and meet growing demands for green industrial development.

To achieve the desired growth in green industry, we need more knowledge about renewable energy sources,

Solution

Terravera partnered with Vestland Fylkeskommune to create dynamic models for six key renewable energy sources: wind, solar, hydro, bioenergy, thermal, and ocean energy. These models provide:

Lifecycle Emission Data: Detailed CO2 emissions per kWh for each energy source.

Land Use Analysis: Quantified land requirements for energy production.

Standardized Indicators: Tools to enable intuitive comparisons between energy sources.

The process began with developing lifecycle analyses for wind energy, mapping the entire value chain from raw material extraction to energy production. This methodology was then applied to other energy sources. Using dynamic datasets, these models serve as an adaptable knowledge base for future decision-making on sustainable energy production.
